Squatch and Lisa's excellent adventure

June 11 - 13, 2015

Papa Dawg's birthday bash took place on Thursday. While Joan was out shopping for some last minute supplies, the lovely Lisa was putting together a buffet dinner for 50.

It didn't matter that there were only a dozen people in attendance. That's what caterers do! She has told me many times that her biggest fear was running out of food before everyone has had all they can eat, and then just a little more. I pulled the folding table out from the basement, spread a few chairs around the big room then took the rest of the day off. I watched some TV, played some guitar and finished the book I was reading. All the while Chef Boy R Lisa was working her kitchen magic.
By the time Joan was back with the birthday cake most everything was done. First the lovely Lisa took 4 pork tenderloins and marinated them Asian style. She then put together a meat tray, a cheese tray and a fruit tray. She boiled, peeled and deveined about 60 of the biggest prawns I have ever seen.

From the gulf not from Asia. The guests were due to arrive at 5 so at 4:30 she made these endive leaves with cream cheese, smoked Salmon and capers. These were amazing! When the guests arrived they didn't last 5 minutes.
As the guests arrived I was put in charge of the music. The closest Joan has to rock n roll was Neil Diamond. That's like calling toast and ketchup pizza! At about 7:30 there was a noise from the drive as one of Joan's neighbours pulled up in a 1968 fully restored Road Runner.

Fred was a retired carpenter who worked in the film business in New York. When he wasn't hitting on the lovely Lisa he was guzzling Irish Mist by the pint. He invited the lovely Lisa to come for a ride in his car which she accepted for both of us. Not what Freddy the weasel was expecting. Still, I got to ride in a nice old car and the lovely Lisa's honour stayed intact.

Everyone there was retired. They were all very interesting people. A retired opera singer, a pharmacist and a guy so old he couldn't remember what he used to do.

At about 11 Maria, who lives across the street was escorted home by Fred the weasel. She's 87 but Freddy still gave it a shot. When he got back he asked the lovely Lisa to drive him home because he was drunk. The lovely Lisa asked me to drive him and she would follow and pick me up in Joan's car. When I went out to the car the disappointment on his face was obvious. "I'm going to drive you home, Fred" I said. "Nobody drives my fucking car!" he said as he tore off, thrush pipes tearing up the peaceful neighbourhood. We know he made it home because we saw him driving the car the next day. Everybody drives drunk around here! It's so sparsely populated that there are no local police and the state troopers take 45 minutes to get there even when they're needed. It's like slipping into a time machine and waking up in 1969! All in all it was a pretty good party. Joan and Lisa started cleaning up while Papa Dawg and myself plunked on the guitars. The lovely lisa and I bought him a couple of guitar lessons and 2 guitar stands for his birthday present.
One of the best things about not drinking is waking up without a hangover. Papa Dawg couldn't say the same thing. He had arranged to take us over to see Uncle Paul Garden Gnome one more time at 11. Coffee in hand we made our way in near silence to Uncle Paul's place. He took off for a business meeting and I asked him to be back in 2 hours. I love Uncle Paul but he doesn't hardly ever leave his place. When Papa Dawg returned I hopped in his car to go to the house he owns at the airport he owns to get his WiFi working. Uncle Paul was going to drive the lovely Lisa over as soon as he finishes his beer.
Papa Dawg's place at the airport is largely unlived in.He goes by every day to check on his mail and play on his computer.

He sold his planes 2 years ago. Between the cost of fuel, no where to go and the increasing regulations, not to mention crashing his plane on the Adirondack trail 5 years ago he was done punching holes in the sky!

His neighbour was allowing him to  poach WiFi for free but Papa Dawg was having trouble hooking it up. I had just connected him when Uncle Paul Garden Gnome arrived with the Lovely Lisa in his Mercedes.

He came in said hello and left.A very strange little man.
We left the airport and drove over to Hawley Pennsylvania with the modem I had removed so Papa Dawg could cancel his Internet now that he was poaching the neighbours.
Dinner tonight was a Chinese Buffet in Milford. There was a line up out the door and 2 guys having a BBQ at their truck in the parking lot of the motel next door. It seems that motel has no mirrors.
The Chinese place had fish. On the buffet too!
We spent the rest of the night watching TV and talking. We were leaving Montgue in the morning. headed back down to Bridgewater New Jersey to Uncle Charlie and Aunt Janice's place. We left at 10 and the 90 minute ride just flew by. As usual, once we were unloaded Papa Dawg got in the car and drove away.
Asbury Park Beach

We rested up for a few minutes then Uncle Charlie suggested we go down to Asbury Park on the Jersey Shore for an Art and Music crawl. We never saw any art and the only music we saw was 2 hippies on a street corner busking. We did however find an overpriced/underwhelming restaraunt for dinner. After dinner we went down to the beach where there were dozens of dogs and people fishing. We saw a guy catch a Ray which he threw back then decided to go up the shore to Sandy Hook where you can watch the sunset with the skyline of New York City in the background.

At the end of Sandy Hook is Fort Hancock. It's an abandoned army base that has fallen into disrepair like much of New Jersey. A 15 minute hike down to the water and it was worth it. The skyline was quite a ways off but the sunset was really nice. There were a lot of Horseshoe crab shells on the beach and several areas were closed off to protect nesting birds.
On our way out we stopped at the 200 year old lighthouse and started to make our way back to Bridgewater. As we crossed the bridge over the river we saw a crowd of people gathering and discovered that tonight was a boat parade. We parked the car and had icecream as we watched the boats go by. Honking there horns and waving to the crowds. I don't know what else happened. I fell asleep in the car as soon as it started moving
Having picture problems, Damn!
That's all I've got
Till next time
Peace out Y'all
